Very good article. It is very common to use the 'carpet bomb' approach but it very rarely works. The key is to narrow down specific sectors or employers you would like to work for and concentrate your career search on them. This way you make best use of of your time and resources whilst being able to make better connections.

Thanks! My tip for aspiring writers is to make time each day to write--as a spiritual discipline of sorts. That way, you'll open to inspiration and ways for writing to be more prominent in your life.

Barbara, hadn't been to your website, but just got to it from your comment on linkedin and wanted to let you know that l absolutely love the site. It's just beautiful to look at and wonderfully organized. Hope you're enjoying summer. I'm loving my time off; it's been a real gift to have time to spend with family and friends and catch up on so many things that go by the wayside when work takes over your life! See you at LPN!

As she did during our entire sojourn in France, Barbara has put her finger on all the salient elements of what for me was an indescribable experience. Friends and family eager for details when we returned were probably a bit disappointed when all I could do was smile, look peaceful and say, "I can't describe what happened. There are no words." Pretty daring stuff, coming from someone who calls herself a writer! Anyway, all I can say is France sure ain't Kansas and Chartres is pure magic. Try it for yourself! Thanks, Barbara and Susanna.

Thanks for your comment, Amy. I liked the connection you made between networking and adventure. If you're seeking new experiences through networking, you'll be interested in what others have to say and that will fuel the conversation.

The way I see it, networking is a way of exploring. When you're looking for a job or thinking about launching a business, networking simply means interviewing people to gather the information you need to broaden whatever horizons you're entering. When I wanted to get into the magazine business, I made a list of 100 people with the kind of job I wanted and interviewed as many of those people as possible to learn about the field. I did the same thing when I was considering opening a private practice as a psychologist. Networking is an essential, invaluable way to learn -- as long as you go into it with a spirit of adventure, true curiosity, and openness to whatever might unfold. Canned elevator speeches are off-putting and unimpressive because they exude impatience with the process of real relating. Ask me for advice on becoming a psychologist over coffee and I'll tell you everything I know and send you to other people who will want to help you in your quest. Start with an elevator speech and I will run the other way fast.
